A message from Ms Stone, Head of Music:

Welcome to the vibrant world of music at City of London Academy Shoreditch Park! As Head of Music, I am delighted to introduce you to our dynamic Music department, where creativity, ambition, and a passion for music flourish.

Our dedicated team of 12 peripatetic tutors from Hackney Music Service offers individual, paired, and small group lessons across a wide range of instruments, including violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, flute, drums, guitar, bass guitar, piano, and voice

At City of London Academy Shoreditch Park, we are proud to provide a music education that is both ambitious and inclusive, ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive as a musician.

Curriculum Overview

Our broad and balanced curriculum emphasises listening, performance, composition, and music theory, ensuring a holistic music education for all students.

In Year 7, every student learns an orchestral instrument, with the opportunity to continue developing this skill throughout their time at school.

We offer Eduqas GCSE and A Level Music. Many of our alumni go on to pursue further studies in music, reflecting the strength and success of our programme.

Year 7 Instrumental Programme

All Year 7 pupils are given the opportunity to learn a new instrument as part of our curriculum offer.

Key Features

  • One hour per week of instrumental tuition
  • Taught in small groups of approximately 10 pupils
  • Delivered for the full academic year at no cost
  • Instruments are provided, with the opportunity to take them home for practice

On their induction day, pupils will receive a form allowing them to indicate their preferred instrument choices. Instruments typically offered include:

  • Trombone
  • Trumpet
  • Cello
  • Violin
  • Clarinet
  • Guitar

While we always aim to allocate pupils their first-choice instrument, this is subject to staff availability. Pupils should not select an instrument they can already play, as this programme is specifically designed for beginners, enabling groups to progress together at an appropriate pace.

Once groups are finalised, instrument changes will not be possible

Instrument Pathways and Progression

The programme provides a strong foundation across four instrumental pathways:

  • Guitar
  • Woodwind (clarinet)
  • Brass (trombone or trumpet)
  • Strings (violin or cello)

By the end of the academic year, pupils are supported to reach Grade 1 standard, assessed through the COLASP Music Grade. This early milestone equips students with the skills needed to progress confidently towards GCSE Music by Year 10

Instrument Loans for Year 7

Pupils will be able to take their instrument home once a loan agreement has been signed.
We ask for a minimum £5 donation to help maintain and service instruments for future cohorts. Further details will be shared at the start of the academic year.

Encouraging Student Practice and Achievement

Regular practice is central to musical progress, and the Year 7 Programme actively supports this through:

  • practice booklet to track home and school practice
  • Access to practice rooms for supervised rehearsal
  • Teacher signatures to recognise effort and consistency

Practice evidence as well as effort in class can be used towards earning COLASP Music Badges!

At the end of the year, students who pass their COLASP Music Grade and have achieved a Bronze, Silver, or Goldbadge will be awarded the Platinum Badge and Certificate in recognition of their commitment and progress.

Opportunities include:

  • Choirs and vocal ensembles
  • Orchestras and instrumental groups
  • Music technology and composition clubs
  • Performance opportunities within school and the wider community
  • Student leadership roles such as Music Ambassadors

These activities encourage collaboration, creativity, and regular performance experience.

Concerts and performance opportunities

Throughout the year, students take part in a wide range of concerts and performance events, including:

  • Winter Concert
  • Spring Recitals
  • Summer Recitals
  • Summer Musical Production
  • Battle of the Bands

We are proud to work in partnership with organisations such as the Barbican Centre and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, offering students inspiring opportunities to engage with professional musicians and high-level performances.
